DJ Booking Tips for Atlanta: Go to the Owner, Skip the Middleman
2026-04-20 · 4 min read
I spent real time DJing for promoters and watching the money get split three ways before it ever reached me. The owners want their cut, the promoters want theirs, and the DJ ends up at the bottom. I changed that, and if you're good enough, you can too.
The math that doesn't add up
Think about how a club night works. The owner wants the money, then the promoter wants it, and somehow everybody in the building is making more than the DJ, the person doing the most work for everyone else to make money. There are nights the parking valet makes more than the DJ. That's not fair, and it's why I stepped back from DJing for promoters as much. The bread wasn't right.
Going direct
Over the last year and a half I went a different route. I started going to the GM and the owner directly and getting paid by them. There are now a few clubs where I'm on direct deposit, with no stress, no waiting, just getting my rate. We're too grown to be waiting on money. DJs have bills and a life outside of this.
I still work with a few promoters on certain nights, and I've got great relationships there. I may not always get the full rate I want, but they show me love and it's organized. The point isn't that promoters are the enemy. The point is to build relationships where you're respected and paid right, instead of being last in line.
Know your value
If you're a DJ who actually brings people out, who sells sections and fills the room, you should be getting paid accordingly, because the venue is already making serious money off the night. That's about value. A basic DJ who just shows up and plays gets a basic rate. A DJ who sells the club should be paid like it.

The tip
Build the direct relationship. Get on terms where you're not chasing a check. And know exactly what you bring to the room, then price it like you mean it.
